About 25 years ago, I bought my wife a big (humungous, actually) unabridged dictionary for Christmas. Since I recently took up woodworking, it seemed that a small table-top stand might be a good first project using actual (read: expensive) wood. The only other piece I built had been with scraps and such that were laying around.
I decided to build it as her present for Christmas, 2006. Of course, I decided that in mid-December. And since I work better under pressure, I thought I’d do it as a surprise, which meant I had to do it at times she wasn’t around.
It’s a modification of a little Stickley stand I saw somewhere. The original piece was simply a top supported by two triangles, but the proportions are similar. I added the quadralinear front legs and closed up the front. It’s all quartersawn white oak.
The finish is a formula that Jeff Jewitt recommended to mimic Stickley’s Fayetteville, using Trans Tint dye, a walnut gel stain and Waterlox. The picture shows the stand on a real Stickley table we bought several years back. I’d say it’s pretty darn close.
And I ALMOST got it done for her for Christmas. At least I finished it before the New Year.

I have always liked stuff like that, the huge dictionary and stand. You did a fine job on the stand, the grain looks fantastic.
is it going to stay on that table, or do you now need to build another project?!

Ha! It’s staying there so far, Darryl, but I did get cracking and built a small table that was inspired by the table the stand is on. I’ll be posting that one later… it started with an old cask that my grandfather had.

Very nice piece. The finish really looks great.

Thanks for the compliments …
BeechPilotBarry: It was a nice chunk of wood to begin with, but the top is bookmatched, which helps amplify the figure.
Mark D: If I ever get around to learning SketchUp, I’ll post the proportions.
