At the end of August I found myself doing what I always do at this time of year, trying to figure out what to make for my wife this year for here birthday. I had decided to make a wooden ring for at least part of the gift. However, I happened to glane at one of my overflowing bookshelves and see my copy of Miyamoto Musashi’s – “A Book Of Five Rings.” I was struck by one of those Eureka moments.
The Box of Five Rings is designed to hold each ring in a different circular section. Each section contains an insert with the same wood as the ring itself.
The box itself is Cherry. From left to right the rings are Walnut, Bloodwood, Spalted Maple, Boccote and Ipe.
If you try and make rings for someone, it’s a good idea to make sure they don’t have any allergies to particular types of wood. Fortunately for me, my wife shares my lack of wood allergies. She is also very pleased with her birthday gift.
Note: One should not draw any additional parallels between the inspiration for wife’s birthday and a book on Martial Warfare. The title just caught my eye.
