This was part request and part me being frugal. My 6 yr old had been wanting an American Girl Doll for a few months now (A friend had an American Girl Bday party). I don’t shop for dolls much and was floored when learning they started around $100. IMO, her Walmart/ Toys R Us dolls are just fine. No one asks me though. Grandma came to the rescue and sprung this one on her a few days ago after learning “Kanani” was her favorite. Naturally, she now wants the furniture and outfit. The beds cost as much as the doll. Just couldn’t bring myself to paying that much for it.
The bed is made from paint grade pine and the like you see at the Big Box stores. I wasn’t staining, so the species wasn’t an issue. I used screws and putty for speed b/c of the paint as well. There is no tricky joinery. Every thing is screwed end grain to face, the one exception being the posts on the head board. They are glued. I used plain acrylic hobby shop paint and mixed in some type of glitter additive I found in the craft buckets. I’m no artist, so my wife is taking over on the project from here. She’s planing on doing some floral stenciling eventually. She’s also started a light purple mattress for it as well. She had me cut hardboard to fit flush in the bed. She’s using stuffing and fabric wrapped around the hardboard for the mattress. The Doll is 18”, so I went for making the bed and mattress 4” inches larger.
