I made this box about a year ago. It is made from maple and wenge. The top to is the most intrigueing part of the box. When you look at the top of the box, note that two of the pieces are darker and the other two are lighter. If you are holding the darker sides in your left and right had and then rotate the top 90 degrees either way, the dark areas will stay in your left and right hand. This is not one of my best boxes, but it was intresting to make. The sides are made from maple crown molding.

it something ‘extra’

Very cool ides, Vjer. I’ve never seen one like it. I’d love to see the effect on the top as you describe it.

Very nice looking box! I like what you did on the sides.
I once used crown molding for feet on a project.

Good looking box – I like the top and the crown molding adds a little something to it’s overall appearance.

Great job! I’m always looking for ways to get creative with moldings. Sometimes ideas come to me in the craziest places. I’ll be out to a movie with my wife and see some furniture in the background and wham! Forget the movie, I’m back at work

How did you join your crown into your corner supports? looks complex. That is a nice bo.

I like this a lot. I’ve never seen crown molding used on a box like that before, interesting how the profile is recessed inside those corner pieces.

Thanks for the kind words. I found the crown molding at my hardwood supplier in Houston. They also had walnut, cherry, and birch crown moldings.
Woodtex: The lid is a lift-off type.
CharlieM1958: The only reason I could think of as to why the top does its thing islight refraction on the surface.
Bradford: The corners of the molding were 45’d and the wenge was then glued to it. Blue tape works really well as clamps for odd shaped glue-ups.
