This is a shadow box that I built for a Chief Master Sergeant that just retired from the Air Force Reserves after 33 years of service. Building this box actually meant a lot to me. The CMSGT happened to be my section Chief and is a great friend and mentor. The purple heart used in this project has significance as well. it was brought back from the middle east where it was being used as decking outside a building. The deck was being ripped up and replaced and the wood was about to be trashed when one of the guys from my squadron realized what type of wood it was under all the dirt and asked if he could have it. The crew brought back several pieces of lumber and we felt that it was only fitting to build the box out of the wood brought from a country that he had flown several combat missions over. It was a lot of work taking the wood from the inital state to flat workable pieces but all in all I think it came out pretty nice.

Very nice Shadow Box. It is amazing what you will sometimes find from a pallet or crate. I one found a pallet that was made from Walnut. Several years ago, My grandfather bought a load of knotty white pine from a guy that advertised it as “Fire wood”. He built a bedroom set from it and use to have allot of people stop by his shop to see what he was working on. A lady came in and seen the unfinished bedroom set and wrote him a check for the entire set and gave him her phone number to call when it was complete. Once complete he called her to get her address to deliver the furniture and come to find out it was the wife of the man he bought the “Fire wood” from.
