LumberJocks

A little something in between a bigger project

I’m in the middle of making oak countertops. I decided that when they are finished I want to see them as much as possible. So, I made a microwave stand to keep them a bit more clear.

I had two old pieces of oak, one with a live edge. I traced the live edge on the other and used the bandsaw to make matching brackets. A keyhole router bit & a two screws was all that was needed to hand them

I love the spalted brackets. And also, I like how the miter frame came out.

The pictures of the walnut slab are of a student from the college I teach at working on a project of his own.

He bought his would from a fellow lumberjock that I put him in contact with, Matt Alexander.

Also, does anyone have an idea why these oak brackets seem to handle like end grain?

How do you mean they handle like end grain. Were they difficult to sand or were they thirsty with the finish?

What a clever way of matching a natural edge! Nice project!

Thanks Robbin.

Lotidus, they were just very hard…not so much the sucking up of the finish.

Really nice to look at today! It was one of those everything was messy days for me -my work, the house -.
Thanks for updating -i am getting really jealous though! -white laminate counter tops…magic eraser can’t even pull off a convincing optical illusion in my house!

-you are right…i dealt with a similar piece lately…like rock!

Thanks Christine. I’m real proud of this one…totally understand those kind of days…the last few weeks the kitchen floors have been torn up so everything is in the living room. Well, we pick and choose our “projects” the best we can and try to live a life that is good, no?
