Pizza Peel

I made this pizza peel for some friends of mine who were dissatisfied with the store bought kind. The wood species are Sapele, Maple Ambrosia, and Padauk. The approximate dimensions are 35 (16 inches without handle being included) x 16-1/4×1/2. I used a jigsaw and a french curve to make the cuts so I do have some flaws but overall, I think it came out pretty darn good. I just wanted to quickly thank Jonathan for giving me great advice on making one and whose pizza peel was used as inspiration.

Well done I love it! Always think about making one of these when I see them on here.

Darryl, Thank you for mentioning my first peel and glad it inspired you to make this rendition. Yours turns out very well. You’ve got an interesting combination of wood here.

I am curious as to the width of your handle? Did you make it a little wider as I said I’d do if I were to do it again? I’ve had another peel in the works for quite a while, but haven’t gotten around to laminating it all up. I think I stopped before getting a few pieces cut to size. I’ll have to resurrect it here one of these days after seeing yours here. Thanks for the reminder, and again, great job on this first peel of yours. I’m sure your friends will get plenty of good use out of it.

What did you apply for your finish?

Hey Jonathan,
I ended up making the handle width 1-1/8 and I used 5 coats of General Finishes Salad Bowl Finishing Mix with #0000 steel wool used in between coats. I called up Woodcraft to get some advice on if I should use the Salad Bowl Mix or a water-based poly and they suggested the Salad Bowl mix. I was concerned about heat which is why I asked but they that should be fine.
