Having a blast making the wine stoppers. Been either giving these as gifts or selling them for $12.00. Woods include padauk, bubinga, osage orange, purpleheart and maple. These take me about 20 minutes from start to finish. i use a light coat of shellac then followed up by either wipe-on poly and Johnsons paste wax or canuba wax. Try them, they are fast , fun, easy and beautiful projects.

Those look great. I just ordered some of these for myself and can’t wait to try them out.

These are nice but it does appear as if you failed to notice the “may be addictive” label in fine print on your lathe.

Seriously, Bob, the more posts I see on turnings the higher up on my tool list a lathe moves. I am sure that I speak for the “lathe challenged” members here when I say posts like these make us want to go out and get a lathe tomorrow.

These are wonderful gifts and you get to have a blast making them. Who could ask for anything more?

Those look great.
I picked up a used midi lathe that I have not tried out yet.

This makes me want to start.

First let me say, great job!! I haven’t tried to make these yet. One question, do you need a special chuck(collett, etc) to make these, or some kind of mandrel? Or can you just do it between centers?

I’ve been turning a few myself (pics are coming, honest!). I use a Jackob’s chuck, and mandrel. I tried using the “drill a hole, then glue in a dowel” method, but the dowel breaks on my almost every time (when I remove the tail stock to finish the top).

Yours look pretty nice!

Actually, I am going to do just that. I am getting a “full size” lathe, and my midi will be just dedicated to pens and bottle stoppers.

Thanks for the kind words, these are really fun to make and everyone seems to like them.

MJ, I use a special mandrell from Penn State Industries ($10) to make these. Check their site on the stopper page.

Lee, Hi pal, I’ve made about 30 pens so far, those are fun too. These seem to go over better and are easier to make and sell.
