This bed that was completed in August 2011 is my Contempo style. This order was actually placed in 2009. It started out as my baseball bed locker murphy bed. I actually built parts of it in 2009 and couldn’t get a hold of the customer to find out some more details. Not getting in touch with a customer is very unusual especially when it is paid in full. After awhile with the bookcases taking up space in the shop I used them on another similar project.

Fast forward to 2011. The customer contacted us and said they were finished with a long remolded and could take the bed if it wasn’t too late. Since the child was older they didn’t want the graphics from the baseball locker. They just wanted it a black color if that was possible. I suggested since we haven’t built it lets change it up completely and build the Contempo style.

The locker bookcases had one big door and as you can see I changed that too. Things really fell into place with this one. A few weeks back I sold a bed that turned out to be an attempted scam. We caught it in time but already had the bed and bookcase built. I used the bed from the scam on an order the week before (whats the chances of same size, same wood, same style on the bed). I had these bookcases left but they were a different style and in oak where the order was paint grade maple. The width on the scammed job was smaller then I’ve ever built and never thought I could use them. The width was perfect for this customers overall width. I called the customer and told them to trust me and I wanted to switch the wood to oak and put a black finish over it (My favorite finish. Love the texture) and wanted to use these bookcases with different doors. They approved. They were just grateful that we would still build the bed after that long of a time. I built it. They came by to look and it and was blown away. They never dreamed it would turn out the way it did.

No building pictures for this one, but others can be found at my Current Projects link at or

Great story, Chris.

Nice build, too.

That’s a nice looking piece of furniture, Chris. Nice save all the way around on these projects.

That’s what I call a customer! You must be doing something right?

Looks great…
what kind of finish did you put on it?
Did you spray it?

It is a flat black lacquer. I did spray it. I used a black lacquer sanding sealer as the undercoat. Another neat effect is to have a undercoater tinted red, then do some sand through.
