Did some yard cleanup recently and have a small pile of junk wood ready for the burn barrel. I was staring at it today before I picked up my daughter after school, and thought it would be a shame to waste all of it, one of the scrap pieces was an oak pallet that was half rotted, but the other half was fairly solid. On the way home I asked her if she would like to make her first birdhouse. Would she!

Just under an hour was all it took to make a basic birdhouse. Nothing fancy, very rustic looking with the faded oak, no finish and even lack of a right angle in a couple places, but zip-zip with the Skil saw and pounded a few nails in, and a handful of rough-cut oak 1×6s turned into a bird’s next home. For the perch she wanted an old pencil of hers – sure, pop it in there.

When we were cleaning up she said, maybe the next one we can paint! Guess I better look through that burn pile again…. :)

Very nice bird house indeed!
She has fine craftsmanship and you can tell there is hidden skill there.
Any bird would be honored to live there!
Good job !

Very nicely done. There is nothing more satisfying than doing a project with your children. I like the pencil perch idea. Gives good character.

An hour spent building a birdhouse with your daughter will have a lifetime of benefits. I commend you, you are a lucky man.
