When I was stationed on Hawaii at Kanehoe in ‘82, I lived out in Kailua. My wife had just bought me a Shopsmith for easy moves while in the Marine Corps. My neighbor was an HPD cop. He asked me to make him a baton/nightstick out of Koa. That was a beauty! If you haven’t seen koa, it has magificent swirls and action with brown and gold colors accented by an almost a rippling iridescent glow in the wood. I was really proud of it. All along I was thinking, “Every HPD Officer is going to want one of these. This is going to make a nice little supplemental business income!”
Mike came back the next day and said everyone raved about it. So, I told him I was ready to take orders. “Oh, no,” he said, “I’m gonna be the only one on the force with something like this.
Lucky I didn’t have it in my hand at that point…..
