This is a shallow relief carving. The piece of Black Walnut is only 1/4” thick. I did an experiment to see if I could do a carving in shallow relief, after all the reliefs on a coin look fine, & look how flat a coin is. My trial didn’t turned out to bad, so you don’t need a lot of wood for carving.
The size: 8” X 8”

Dick, I was so taken with the baby elephants that I didn’t see the ducks. What an interesting combination. Where did you get this idea – I wonder if baby elephants would be as curious as these?

That picture was an ad in Parade Magazine. It was a small painting. I’ll see if I can find it in my collection of clippings.

Dick, I suppose you are on constant alert for pictures that would serve as inspiration for carvings in the same way I am for pictures of small boxes. I think you have more from which to choose.

I have three large manila envelopes filled 2” thick with clippings from newspapers, calendars, & magazines, you name it. Whatever looks interesting I tear it out. Since we’ve kept most of my carvings, I have a lot more to post. I’ve been editing the images to black backgrounds. I think it enhances the naturalness of the wood. I hope people don’t mind the things I’ve done in the past. I’ve never had the chance to display them before the internet came along.

this is SO cute.
Which do you prefer (if you have a preference)—shallow or not?
Or is it like comparing apples and oranges?

It’s hard to say, but most of my carvings are deep relief, so that must tell you something, or whatever fits the situation.
