Does it open or do you just need to get a couple of inches higher?

No it doesn´t open. This is just to support my feets while sitting in chairs and also to get few extra centemeters
I´m not sure step stool is the right english word for this item. Engish is not my native language.

I suppose a foot rest would be a better title for it. Looks good either way ;-))

In the film industry these are called apple boxes. Judging by it’s thickness that looks like about a quarter apple box. They’re normally painted mat black so that they don’t cause reflected light to mess up the shot, but I like the natural look of yours much better. I think I might make one to help my daughter up onto our bed, I’m sure it would look great in oak! :D
