Yesterday was my wife’s birthday. Because she is pregnant, and due in 2 weeks, we had already celebrated by going out. And she had ordered her presents a couple weeks ago.
Well, the day started off poorly. The boys were crazy, and our second oldest had a stomach bug, so I decided to stay home from work and help out. So she got about 3 more hours of sleep, I took care of the youngins, and did a little housework, and was rewarded with shop time in the afternoon. Not wanting to get into anything big right now, I decided to make a box for her.
She had been asking for a storage/travel container for crochet hooks that I turned for her, and she really liked the other box I made for her MP3 player. So I made an elongated version of the box.
The box is made from cherry, and maple. It is finished with linseed oil and wax, just like the hooks.
I have gotten better at working with curly maple since the winter challenge, and am happy with the results of this box. I think it turned out ok, for only a couple hours work.
—edit—
I added a closeup of the box side. It just looks like pixelation in the first two, but in real like it looks like the grain you see in quater sawn oak, every once in a while.

Great looking box, at first look I thought it was quater sawn oak, until I read your post saying it was cherry…I have alot of oak growing here on my property, when I harvest for firewood I have a few logs quater sawn at the mill and let air dry for a year befor using for projects around the shop…...
