This is a project I just completed after a few weeks of work. I hand carved the axe and used 550 cord for the grip and decoration. I then built the shadow box and the frame out of pine and finished them with gloss paint with no clear coat (I wanted to keep the roughness of the wood, to go with the theme of the shadow box). The pieces on the small wooden plaques are of my own design, representative of each of the platoons in my company. I finished with a base of tan matting and placed red, green and red suede over the top to represent the Battalion. The front is hinged with Velcro tabs to keep it closed when displayed and the axe is held with 1/4 inch dowels cut and flushed into the ply backing.

It was definitely worth it though, the person this is being presented to is one of the greatest Soldiers I’ve ever met!

Your project is almost perfect… All that’s missing is a sign on the front that says: “In case of trouble. BREAK GLASS!”
