2nd Box, working out the kinks

Well, I’ve completed my 2nd box. It’s made from spalted cherry with a curly maple sliding lid. As you can see, I’ve got some work to do with tightening up the corner miters, but I’m on the road to success with that. I miscut the rabbet for the sliding lid (far edge in the photos) but I didn’t want to waste a piece of curly maple. I really like the way the knot in the front left corner “wraps around” the joint, and will do more of this in the future, once my miters are tightened up.

I originally designed/made this box for my wife, but during construction, we received into our lives a granddaughter, born 2 months early at a wedding in Cancun. Soooooo, I believe it’ll be hers. She’s doing well and the Children’s Healthcare folks in Atlanta are awesome! Baby Maddie certainly feels loved.

Thanks in advance for comments and suggestions!

Jeff

I like it . The contrasting wood colours are great. You’ve done a really nice job finishing the box and the woods grain is nicely matched.
Congratulations on the birth of your granddaughter, i’m sure she’ll treasure this box for a long time,
Well it may take a few years for her to appreciate it properly but a beautiful box from grand-dad is possesion few are lucky enough to have.

thanks for sharing

Use beautiful wood like this and no one sees any mistakes. Nice job on your second box. The one your wife gets will be even better.

Beautiful box! And congrats on the new granddaughter!

What kind of finish did you use on it?

Have your say...
