Kao-Maple Pen Box This is a commissioned piece for a lady who is giving an antique fountain pen as a gift. She asked that this presentation box have some sort of decoration that would suggest water be incorporated in the design. I chose to do the body of box in Koa and the lid in birds eye maple, both with contrasting “waves”. The box has a black velvet lining with a trough for the pen and is approx. 7×2.5 inches. The corners are a hybrid half-lap joint and the lid is hinged with hidden pins. Hand-rubbed poly finish. (That is the 1970 Waterman pen in the third picture.)

Nice box. I love Koa. Especially how it shimmers and changes color at different angles. Very nice job on this. I’m sure she’ll love it.

The string lines work nicely here.

I haven’t had a chance to work with Koa before. Is it as easy to work with as maple – my favorite? It looks beautiful. What did you use for the hinge pin? Is it wood or metal?

Cool looking box you have there. I really like how you attached the sides…. Cool and different way to do it…
