A small project to keep me out of trouble at the weekend. This is a banksia pod bud vase with walnut finial. I find that the finial is a PITA to turn, as I struggle to roll a nice half bead to the left with a skew chisel (I’m right handed). However this one came out OK, and I guess that my technique is improving.

Nice.

Is the banksia naturally patterned the way it came out, or did you do something fancy after turning the vases?

Thanks for Sharing.

I have been wanting to turn some pods. That’s really cool!

ChrisN, the banksia pod is naturally patterned that way. They have about 4 layers, and I am down to the last two here. I use a gloss finish on the pod as I like to have a nice contrast with the satin on the walnut finial.

hi Stuart..Nice turnings with the Banksia pods. I made a piece from one once and it is really strange how it goes from rough to like velvet and then to the base wood. Those are nice finials. They look like a lot of patient work!!

Wow!! Those are really nice, at last, something nice out of a Banksia Pod. I have turned a few, but never made anything worthwhile, will have to try this.
