It started out that I wanted to turn some wood and see what each species wood looks like from the firewood pile so I started turning one into a huge telephone insulator to display for people to see the grain. Then I got another idea, perhaps I can make it into something useful than just a giant paperweight. So I came up with a paper towel holder for the house. This one is out of Mayday. I notched it with a hack saw and chiseled it out as best I could as I do not have fancy tools so I just eyeballed it. It’s a bit off but if anything helps to hold the napkins in better. I drilled a large hole in the bottom and poured quite a bit of lead in there and finished it with a rubbing oil and bottomed it with 1/16 gasket material, It’s amazing where the bottom of the notch is how dull the wood looks but once the oil is applied how much grain comes out. I hope you enjoy!

Hi Mike, This is a very unique project. It never ceases to amaze what turners a capable of coming up with. I am beginning to believe that turning involves as much imagination as skill.
Thanks for sharing.

Great replica. My mom would love one of those as I remember her having the insulators setting on a shelf when I was a kid.
