This bamboo hut was a project I did for a caterer that featured Hawaiian cuisine. The hut broke down for transport and storage. Although primarily made of bamboo, there was a lot of woodworking involved. The end of each bamboo pole had to have a wooden plug turned and epoxied in place. All end plugs also had threaded inserts installed. It was my introduction to West System Epoxy with filler and it proved it’s worth.

The roofing was made of a woven matting material that the customer provided. It was sandwiched between 1 1/2” wide strips of 1/4” baltic birch. The baltic birch was then covered by 1 1/2” wide strips of bamboo, once again provided by the customer. Although the four uprights appear to be bamboo, the are actually 4” diameter PVC pipes with PVC rings applied with caulk and then painted to simulate bamboo. The uprights fit over a 10” tall steel cylinder welded to an 18” square 1/4” steel plate.

I absolutely love the design..looks pretty simple to make. Can you make me one of these?

-- Mistake? No, that's just an unexpected design opportunity....
