I built a few boxes to send to my sister. She will be adding pyrography and adding a finish. She asked that I not apply a finish on what I send her so I wiped them down with Mineral Spirits so you can see a bit of the grain. Yes, I’ll make some lids before I send them off to her.

Part of this exercise was to try some new techniques. I’m not in love with all of them. I thought the double-color spline would have looked better or more interesting. I’ll try other variations next time.

All boxes are from recycled Oak wood flooring. Splines are a mix of oak, mahogany, and cherry.

I have several half finished lid-less boxes.. not sure If I will ever get around to finishing them.. maybe just let the go lid-less like yours… they are not bad at all..I too like the double colour spline…

It’s good to experiment Rance. I like the ideas here and I like the two color splines.
Maybe the next step is to make two layer, two color splines that look like checker banding??
With a cover veneer on each side that would be four layers and might look pretty good
? :-)

I like that you didn’t go with the 90 degree sides on all of them.

I like how you have various ways and looks on how they were assembled. Variety is always nice.

I am drawn to the one with the knot, grain swirls. It really adds something to the box. I’m sure your sister will appreciate your gift.

Thank you all for the comments.

Paul, I think next time I’ll use a smaller strip of the darker wood, and put it in first, not last. I like the idea of experimenting with built-up splines too. Razor, I didn’t think I’d like the corners being cut off, but it is growing on me. Cosmo, I’m trying to break away from the norm. Kenn, God made the knot. I just revealed it.

Picture two looks really similar to a jewelry box i made. The curved sides with splines. I just didn’t use a good color for splines. Awesome looking boxes!

Rance,

A very nice group of boxes you’ve made there…

... but… why did you have to go Topless to gain attention? LOL
