This is a box with a chess board as a top or lid. The entire project was done with maple and walnut. This was also the first time I tried to turn a chess set. The most difficult for me became making the pieces exactly alike, especially the pawns, they stand all in a row and the slightest difference is very noticeable. The box is maple with walnut dovetail keys, the board or top is 16” x 16”, The box is 3 1/2” high.

Very nice job! What finish did you use on the pieces? Also have a look at my chess pieces, I’m a series of all the oopses, one blog for pawns, rooks etc, I’m very close to finally being happy with them to do a whole set.

Tom,
This is a gorgeous project. I really like the combination of walnut and maple. Between posts like this, the bowls and pens I am beginning to realize what a void I have in my woodworking by lacking a lathe. I am sure that this project was not an easy one to complete but you have done a masterful job.
Thanks for the post.

It’s hard to say how long it took because I only worked on it at my leasure, but over all about 3 weeks. The finish was wipe on poly because the pieces seemed too difficult to spray.
