the first picture is the completed end table its what they call civil war style . i made this end table for my wife using scrap spalted walnut i bought from a sawmill as odd lots. i came up with the design in my head

the 2nd picture shows the spalting of the black walnut i used as accent in the top, the top as well as the box base has 1 coat of boiled linseed oil then 3 coats of gloss polly with 320 sanding in between each coat

3rd pic shows another view of the spalting of the top

4th pic shows the side of the leg , the foot is joined to the side using mortise and tenon joints notice the contracting colors between the dark and the white.

the 5th and last picture shows the joints i used to put the main box that holds the table together the joints are what i call a glue box joint

i really enjoyed making this it was a very simple yet elegant design this project used lumber that otherwise would have wasted hope you enjoy i look forward to your comments

It looks very nice, hard to believe it is scrap wood. To me spalted always adds a unique look.

This is very neat! All my “best” walnut gets sold so I’m always looking for ways to use the “scrap”. Added to the to do list!!

I like this and the deisgn you came up with is very good. Hard to believe no one knew that spalted walnut was worth another look. Good job and compared tp my walnut piece, I have a ways to go to get to where you are.

Great design and choice of wood. I’ve never seen spalted walnut. I’ve got some other spalted stuff stashed. I do have a couple of black walnut logs out in the woodpile, I’ll have to check it.
