My girlfriend and I wanted to make something special as a gift for my God daughter for her christening. Got lots of help with the design and details along the way from my girlfriend.
My previous bandsaw box was practice, and now it was time to have at it.
My first attempt for this was with a solid cedar block I cut from a log. It was a bit small, and I had trouble holding the cut in the curve for the drawer, and ruined it… Back to the drawing board!!
Decided to use maple because I like the feel, and color, and thought it would color the way we wanted it to with stain. Started with a length of 1×8… glued up with Titebond 3.
As I said, I had lots of design help, which I usually need when making something others (not just myself) might appreciate. In fact, all design and finish credit goes to my girlfriend.. I am merely the laborer on this one!
‘Signature’ is done with water-based Sharpie marker… The heart and accent is a stamp.
Finished with Minwax water based “Antique Rose” stain, and 3-4 coats of spray on Miwax Polycrylic, Satin.
Looks ‘pinker’ than in the pics, which was the desired effect.
Our hope is that it will not only be a great item for a little girl’s room, but simple enough to be appreciated forever!
I welcome any thoughts and comments!!!
