My wife had been bothering me for months to try to build her some shelves with my existing tools. I had a few odd power tools for doing basic house hold repairs, but nothing that could cut any really thick wood. So I went to Lowes originally just intending to buy a circular saw, but once I noticed that buying a decent saw, saw horses, clamps, and what not would cost me over a hundred dollars anyways, I picked up a table saw that was on sale. So I went and bought my lumber which was 5 2X10X8’s and 2 2X4X8’s and cut them to the proper size. Then I used outdoor wood screws to attach pieces of 2X4 to 2 2X10 pieces to make the sides and give me something to mount the shelves on. Then I attached the pieces of 2X10 that would be the actual shelves to the 2X4’s that held the side pieces together. Being my first project it was a little wobbly and cock-eyed. But after a trip to Walmart that same night for a Skil Belt Sander, I managed to fix the wobble. It was sturdy enough to hold up my weight, so I imagine the flowers my wife plans to put on it will be held up just fine. I know it’s not very pretty, but I stained and sealed it. It my was my first project, and I was proud of it.

That came out real nice.
And just keep justifying those tool purchases to the wife by making nice stuff for you both to enjoy.
Now that you have this under your belt, the rest is all down hill.
Good job!
ps: welcome aboard Lumberjocks.

@Woodwrecker Thank you for the kind words and encouragement. I look forward to posting my progress. I actually just made the wife a deck bench today. It gave me some ideas for how I will ultimately made my work bench. Also the task allowed me to justify buying a circular saw, a shop vac and a jig saw.

Welcome to Lumberjocks!
You’re off to a great start. Now prepare to have your time and money consumed by the addiction. :-)
