I was splitting some hackberry firewood when I saw this spalting so decided to make a box [what else?]. I bandsawed the top and body, added Ipe ends, pinned the lid, and done. Finished with BLO and wax. Dimensions are 11×6x4 1/2”.

aaaah … the secrets of firewood. Thanks for not burning this wood and making something so beautiful from it.

I love that spalted wood. I have made a few boxes with spalted firewood and they are my favorite projects. Very well done.

Wow! That is just beautiful!

Tell me again why you’re splitting firewood in July?! ;)

Yet another beautiful piece.
Tell your sweet wife to stop complaining or you will make twice as many!
(just kidding… I don’t need another knot on my head thank you very much!)

Thanks for the kind words. Mine arent as nice as Gregs by a long shot. Alistair; I’d send you some but the postage would be bad. Donnie; We cut wood when trees die as dead trees really tend to depress me. Plus, it provides an opportunity to “MAN UP” when its 106 and 80% humidity! Chuck; come and get it. We burn lots of pretty wood. I think we have so much spalting because of our heat and humidity. Fungi like those conditions.
