I was splitting some Oklahoma soft maple and saw this piece: cool swirling grain and some spalted areas so decided not to burn it. I was surprised how dark colored it got when I applied the BLO. Bird shaped pulls were offcuts from the inside of the smaller box which was cut from the center of the big box drawer.

Those are some really nice boxes! Try some spalted hackberry too! We were also cutting firewood and said the same thing, “this is too pretty for firewood”. So we kept it and found a few videos of how to make bandsaw boxes and started making them about a month ago. We have some pics of ours posted here!/TwistedFamilyCraftsOK
