Mallets Mallets No-picture-s Click the pictures to enlarge them

These mallets were made in my Intro to Woodworking class a year ago. The main wood is walnut with laminations of maple and lyptus. The small mallet has leather faces.

Well, these are without a doubt the prettiest mallets I’ve ever seen.

Thanks for the comments. I do use them, more so the small one. The big one is a little too big. At some time, I plan to make another small one with a slightly larger head and as a dead-blow type.

I like these. The contrasting woods make this an interesting piece. There is nothing wrong to make a tool that not only is functional but also looks good.

I will have to put one of these on my to do list now that I am using hand tools more.

Those are beautiful! Wow. I agree with Charlie, they are the nicest I’ve seen. They are great as a set. I really like those.

Have you used them? In a way I hope not.

Very nice work.

Did you dowel these to hold the handle in?

The handle on the small mallet is blind dove-tailed into the head. The upper part of the handle on the large one is tapered so that it slides into the head from the top. The receiving slot in the head is also tapered so that when the head is about an inch or so from the end of the handle the head and handle are in full contact and won’t slide any further.

Dowels were used in the heads to aid in aligning the laminations.

As mentioned this mallet has seen some serious use. I didn’t realize how much bad it looks.

I guess it’s time to make another batch. Looked great when it was new.

The lead shot in the head makes it very effective, and the leather faces keeps it from marring work pieces.

Lee – A question about the lead shot – did you happen to have some around when you made your dead-blow mallet or did you have a source for small quantities of the shot?

I haven’t found a source for small quantities and buying a 25lb bag of shot from a sporting goods store isn’t economical for making a mallet or two.

Hi, neighbor, I like your mallets. I was planning on building a dead blow mallet. Got to finish my house first.
