get yourself a woodburner like you used to use in elementary school … they’re inexpensive compared to say, a new handplane, and they can be great fun. i recently was asked to participate in a fundraiser called ‘flights of fancy’ for the local dorset theatre festival. they gave artists in the community raw birdhouses by a local maker and asked us to decorate them. they’ll all be auctioned off at a fancy garden party in august. i put off doing mine until the very last minute and didn’t have time to paint it, but it was still a lot of fun … you can do other stuff with this tool and i’m still trying to figure out how to put this technique to use in a ‘real’ piece of furniture. here's another blog post from a while back.
have fun

I’ve have one of those wood burners sitting in my drawer for about five years now, Dan. I always wanted to use it to accent my work and add details. After seeing your cute birdhouse, you have inspired me to pull it out and give it a try!
This is a great project and I hope it makes lots of money for the fundraiser. Thanks for showing it to us!
Sheila :)

That is nice.
Might I also make another suggestion? You should enter it as well into the Lumberjocks contest currently going one, Birds Of A Feather.

I like it. Too nice to hang in a tree.

Dan,
Beautiful work, I was going to say paint would be superfluous but after looking at your blog I’m not so sure.

I used the same wood burner! I love the entrance to the bird house. It really takes patience to do all that. Beautiful work!

Pretty sharp. You made a good looking birdhouse into a better looking birdhouse.

I think it’s great, but I wonder what the birds think?
