This is a commissioned piece ordered by a co-worker of mine.
Three facts about my co-worker:
1) He is a Lego Fanatic
2) He has a Baby Boy who is turning one next month
3) He is a Lego Fanatic
He was browsing the internet a couple of month’s ago when he ran across this toy box that look just like a Lego brick and wondered if I could make something that looked like it. He SAID he wanted it for the kid’s Birthday Present, but I am pretty sure it’s more for him. ;-)
I said “Sure”, but I also said that I really didn’t like painting too much. He then agreed to paint it himself – Bonus!
Here’s the finished product – measuring 19×38 inches and 29 inches high it is totally proportioned like a lego brick. The posts on the top are even exactly matched to the size of the box as a real lego brick is. I used 3/4” furniture grade plywood and pocket screws to hold it together. The bottom is set in dadoes. This is a beast of a toy box!
All holes and any imperfections were filled with Water Putty then sanded smooth.
Holding the lid on is a full length piano hinge. Keeping the lid from crashing down on Baby’s fingers is a heavy duty toy box lid system from Rockler – it holds the lid stationary at any position. I HIGHLY recommend this for any toy box builders out there!
The empty picture slot will be filled with a painted, finished version of the box when I get it from my customer.
