Elegant Box

Here is a splined mitred box with triangular contrasted woods. I used cocobolo and figured maple for the body. The splines are purple heart. I was originally going to cut the top out of the box….but opted to make a triangular top to set off the contrasts on the body. The top has a handle of curly Koa the top panel is rosewood and figured maple. The handle is attached with 2 brass rods – (this koa was originally a pen blank…but it twisted while awaiting the lathe….so I thought it would make an interesting handle). The finish is tongue oil with 2 coats of oil modified water poly (satin)...I rubbed it out with rottenstone and buffed on a coat of minwax neutral.

All critiques and comments welcome…thanks for taking a look.

Thank you all for you kind words….Alistair…glad to see you on again. My better half loves those tea caddy’s you mentioned….it wasn’t my intent to reproduce one…but the wood provided otherwise…I start with a design in mind and always end up adapting as I go along….thats what makes woodworking such an interesting pursuit to me.

Yes, elegant, simple, straight line design reminiscent of Art Deco. I like it very much, especially the handle. You were thinking “outside the box” for sure!
