Have a Bowl, or 4!

Here are 4 new bowls I have turned. Pictures suck but that is what I get for using a Blackberry. Good news is my neighbor is a professional photographer & web designer so I will get some Bad Ass photos for my website.

1st Bowl is a shallow Cocobolo bowl/dish. I am really struggling to get a decent finished project from Cocobolo. The stuff is damn hard and not to forgiving. Result is a 8×8x3 blank ends up as a 4×4x1.5 bowl. Just a matter of time and practice.

2nd is the best finished bowl I have ever turned. It is turned from a beautiful piece of Spalted Ambrosia Maple. I am really liking this form for bowls. It is a footless base and the rim curves back in to the middle. They feel great in the hand but are stable enough for use as a salad bowl. I made this one for my Dad’s cousin who is visiting from Wichita. Her late husband was a former CEO of Coleman so she has spent a great deal of time decorating her many houses. She seemed genuinely impressed with the quality.

3rd bowl is a from Honey Locust, a new popcorn bowl for my son. It is the largest of the 4, he likes a LOT of Popcorn! I almost turned the shoulders to thin so the base ended up really flat, which is actually kind of cool looking.

Finally is a medium sized Quilted Maple Bowl. The 1st bowl(of many many) that is not going to friends or family, but into storage to be sold this winter.

I finished all of them with 3 coats of Salad Bowl Oil then a final Coat of Dr’s Woodshop Friction Polish.

Thanks for taking a look!

I have a couple of honey locust bowl blanks roughed out. They have been drying for about a year. Thanks for posting yours. I was wondering what they would look like when finished.
