On Tuesday (21 June 2011) I was privileged to spend the day with a renowned South African Turner, Dave Stephenson. You can see some of his work in Div’s blog here. He showed me the basics of bowl turning and gave me many good tips and pointers as well. Dave is an amazing guy and I am truly grateful for the time he gave me.
The bowl measures 90mm (3-1/2 in.) diameter and 53mm (2-1/16 in.) hight. It was turned out of a piece of Kiaat burl (Pterocarpus angolensis) which is a local wood of Southern Africa. It was finished with shellac.

Thanks Alistair. We decided to keep the walls thicker to accentuate the grain of the burl. I think it was much easier to have someone there to guide me. I really enjoyed it and now need to get my hands on some blanks.
