Project Information
I was asked to cut down a Lilac tree that had out grown itself, i.e. was too close to the house. It came down in mid-winter and I had a 5 to 6 inch trunk to work with. When I cut into the wood for a boot the aroma of Lilac was spectacular and persisted until the boots were completed. However the wood did twist and some checking occurred.
The pair with rough bark was a branch too small for a large boot and just enough for a small pair. The other two came from the larger trunk dimension. There is quite a variety of colour within the wood and a red growth ring was quite the surprise.
Power carved with Foredom and Dremel tools.
I sanded them with a drum sander, 220 grit, and finished with Clapham's wood polish hoping to retain the aroma of lilac.
