I got some old salvaged lumber from a barn, it was really nasty looking stuff, rough, rotten in spots, cow and bird poop, but I took some board. It sat for a while, the I ran them throw a planer (wearing a respirator). I was so shocked how in a few passes, was this perfect wood, though some ugly planerblades after. I went back, but the barn was burned down to get rid of it and they made a garage there. American chestnut is so easy to work. They are growing some hybrid trees around here, but it will be a long time before they are commercially harvested if ever. Save it if you have a chance, 1/4 inch down is some nice wood.
