I wanted to build a basic candlestick box as a gift using a few scraps of maple, especially the quilted maple lid. It’s a basic box with rabbeted finger joints cut free-hand on the tablesaw. I used the tablesaw to bevel the lid on 3 sides followed by some smoothing on the belt sander. I used chisels and gouges to make the little finger pull. I have to say the lid feels almost supple to the touch. I would alter the ‘open’ end of this type of box next time I make one. I used simple Watco Teak Oil for this finish.

Very nice. Good creative use of scraps. Sounds like a perfect project to make as a little gift. Making it bigger, it would fit a wine bottle..

It’s beautiful.
I like the simple look and the play in the lid wood.

It’s a wonderful reproduction of a colonial candle box. Congratulations.
