I made this bench for my 13yo son for his birthday. He was torn between and blanket chest and a bench and settled on this idea. It matches some of his rustic and Arts and Craft / Mission furniture. Surprisingly, it’s plain old poplar stained with Bombay Mahogany stain/poly with several coats of spray on poly. The bench top came from a spalted, curly grained 1×10 of poplar and by good fortune, the aprons and stretchers also had some curly figure. I was tempted to drill and plug the tenons in the aprons and stretchers, but the sparse detail grew on me so I skipped that step. I think I could have used conditioner to even out some of the tone but such is life. I added 1/2” copper piping for the shelf partly for kicks.
Anyway, I hope it serves my son well into the future. I can only hope.
