My neighbour had a block of mesquite rolling around his half-ton pickup. He was using this stump to prop up the hitch on his trailer. I showed him some of my free form carvings and one thing led to another he gave me the block of mesquite for a carving. The wood was battered and had severe cracks in it. When I started to cut into the block I exposed some serious cracks but wasn’t about to be defeated. I cut the blanks smaller than usual and each and every odd piece was made into a boot.
It was well dried out and the carving was easy. The surprise came with the finish! After sanding I finished the pieces with Clapham’s furniture polish and – Wow! The wood also had a pleasing aroma. I guess that’s why it is a preferred wood in barbecuing.

Thanks to all of you for your fine comments. While I write this comment two new ideas came into my head. Got to go and make a couple of sketches! RH
