"Art" Tray?

I had a small slab of purpleheart that I hesitantly decided to take a grinder to. I also wanted to put my new drill press to work so I decided to try this tray. I have really liked all of the art boxes I have seen on LJ. I thought it was time that I try my hand at something like that. I finished the piece with three coats of Minwax poly with steel wool rubbing in between each coat.

I love the glistening effect from the grinding wheel. Purpleheart is great to carve. Did you use a milling bit in the drill press?

Thanks for the info. Maybe I should have! I used a forstner bit to remove the most of the material from the tray. I then used my router to complete the removal of the material.

Have your say...
