A Cutting Board for Me!

I had actually made this board last year, just playing around with the pattern. I had initially planned to eventually sell it, but forgot about it in the basement and it got covered with junk. I moved into my first apartment and realized the importance of having a cutting board. I found this, sanded it down and applied Clapham’s beeswax (something I’ve wanted to try anyway!) It’s maple and padauk in the centre, walnut strips, and red oak on the outside.

Neat idea! The padauk’s grain almost makes it look rounded – kind of like a cork.

Be warned however, that red oak really sucks in moisture due to it’s grain structure and will expand/contract differently. Keep it waxed and dry and you should be fine.

Great job!

Thanks Bob, the padauk is my favourite part of this board. I was wary about the red oak before I used it, but this was a bit of an experiment board. I probably won’t use it again in a board, though I do like the look of it. I’ve been taking care of it though, waxing it, and cleaning it immediately to avoid any food getting into the huge open grains.

Thanks for the comment!
