well, even i have to admit, this is kind of a ‘fancy’ one. we’ve been working with this client off and on for over 20 years and he does enjoy pushing the envelope. he loves mother of pearl and abalone and we’ve certainly got some of that here. the abalone is from luthier supply an excellent source of raw material and precut shell blanks. the little ‘saturns’ on the ends of the through tenons are an interpretation of a detail from a previous piece, and the ‘secret compartment’ in the last photo was just a brainstorm at the end … this one took a lot of focus and energy by trevor mott, and some fine finishing work by will. the sustainably harvested, fumed, spessart oak from talarico hardwoods is an unusual and beautiful wood that we haven’t used before. it’s a really interesting combo of quartered figure, browns and blacks that runs completely through the lumber. lots more photos, cad drawings and process pics on my dorset custom furniture blog ... it was a nice project … dan

wow, very fancy…
That wood is amazing. Also, the work on the top front moon phases. I can imagine marking everything on that piece was a bit of a pain.
Thanks for sharing your shop’s awesome work.
