The wife took the baby to a birthday party today so I finally had a chance to go out in to the garage and make something. Hard to believe its been 4 months since I set foot out there, but I haven’t built a single thing since my son was born in Jan of this year.
I picked up a redwood turning blank for $10 at the local wood yard and went to sawing. It’s just a run of the mill bandsaw box but I like how it turned out. The total time spent so far is about 2 hours including glue ups.
I tapered the sides for some interest, but I have no idea of the angle- I just tilted the table on the bandsaw to where I thought it was visually pleasing. I used the tapers I cut off the original hunk of wood as shims for when I glued it back up and everything turned out nice and straight.
I’ve put a couple coats of tung oil on it so far- I’ll let it cure overnight and then hit it up with some 000 steel wool and add a couple more tomorrow to finish it up.
This was more of a time waster and just an excuse to get in to the shop but it turned out so nice I might give it away at the next birthday opportunity that pops up :)
