Purpleheart and Canarywood Bench

Purpleheart and Canarywood Bench

I created this bench to see how the two woods Canary and Purpleheart complimented each other. I mitererd the purpleheart frame around the canary wood top. I sanded to 220 with a random orbital sander then finished it with General Finishes Arm-R-Seal Semi Gloss. I have created small decorative boxes using this combination and really like the final results. The canary wood does seem to darken over time so in the future I will try some U.V. resistant finishes in the future so I can maintain the purple and gold look.

I love the combination. One concern, though. Is that solid canary wood, or is it just veneered over a stable core? The reason I ask is that I would worry about wood movement and those miters. Of course, with the nature of my career (military) I move from climate-to-climate every few years, so I HAVE to think about wood movement (learned the hard way).

Really nice looking bench. I like the contrasts between the woods. Purple and Gold – same colors as our reigning National Football Champion LSU Tigers :-))

Very nice piece of furniture Hanson. You know we have a timber down under called bloodwood. When it is green and being sawn into flitches the saw can hit a pocket of sap. This sap can spurt everywhere and is blood coloured, hence the name bloodwood. Very sticky ending if you happy to be in the vicinity.

This is a very nice looking bench. The combination of the two woods is really a nice idea since they compliment each other well.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you all for the nice comments this is indeed a great site!

To answer your question Muzhick the top is one board of canarywood. The purpleheart strips are glued along side the canary (similar to a cutting board) but of course the ends are mitered to create a frame. I did use biscuits when joining the two woods. Your concern about the movement is valid but I always wanted to see how wood movement will affect a top like this. The piece is a year old – so far so good. I have not noticed any changes in the top as of yet – maybe my luck will hold – thanks for the tip.

Wow that Canary wood has some great character. Good job mixing the two woods.

Hansondvm – Thanks for posting this. It looks great!

I think I will try different finishes on the pieces I bought and set them in the sun to see what happens.

Sounds like you have a woodworking practice, similar to your DVM practice in that you try something, and if it works, that’s great. If it doesn’t, then we re-evaluate, etc. Good mindset, and I appreciate you “experimenting” with the wood combination—after a few more years we’ll know even more!

Thanks for posting!

That is just gorgeous! I believe the two woods complement each other very nicely. Love that piece of Canarywood you used, it’s really beautiful.
