I built this fire place when I was remodeling my living room. I did not have a fire place originally. It is a gas vent free model. I used a marble tile for the surround and made the mantle out of oak. I put a lip on the front to prevent stuff from falling off and I made some hooks for the stockings that hook onto the lip so I did not need to put holes in the mantle. My wife wanted a place to plug in her decorations but we did not want the cords hanging down so the kids could pull them down on their heads. I wanted the outlets hidden so I recessed 3 in the top and put covers over them . To make them accessible I glued a washer on the under side of the cover and use a rare earth magnet to remove them . I still need to build 2 cabinets on each side of the fire place. When I get them done I will post them.

Looks good. I especially like the thought behind the front lip and the addition of the outlets, as well as the way you access them when needed. Nice! I’ll be curious to see how the cabinets turn out.
