Well, my wife’s birthday isn’t until next month, but I recently was given a commission in the Navy, and will be leaving for school next week. I’ll be gone for about a month and a half which means I miss her birthday this year, but believe me it isn’t the first I’ve missed.

Well, the box is Purpleheart, with Wenge splines and bottom. The top is a piece of Curly Maple I bought at the local big box a while back. Finish is BLO/Poly blend then topped with Paste Wax.

I got the inspiration to texture the box from Andy’s Art Box blog here on Lumberjocks. The method I used to build this box isn’t exactly how Andy did his, Honestly I built the purpleheart portion of the box about 2 years ago and didn’t like it… It has been sitting in my shop holding spare drill bits until I decided to resurrect it. This is my first real attempt at a box, and I am quite pleased with the way it turned out. My wife loves it.

The box is sitting on top of another project I did a while back. My ebonized maple side table.
