"Loft" Project

I know it’s a bit of a stretch to call this a ‘woodworking project’, but I wanted to share it anyhow. It was a fun project.

The area you are looking at is the stairwell ascending to the 2nd floor of my dad’s house. For 30 years he has been wanting to make better use of the space – the wall at the back of the photos originally went straight down to the ceiling on the first level. This ‘loft’ is what we came up with. As you can see, it includes a hidden area in the angled portion that you can access once the carpet is pulled back. And, yes, it is large enough for my 6’2”, 220lb, frame to fit into. This is where dad has put all of his long guns and my mom’s silver, etc. Eventually I will erect some sort of Japanese screen to hide the contents. I still have not come up with a good method for accessing the space (other than the thrown-together wooden ladder pictured). I envision some sort of drop down ladder, as you find off the back of a boat.

Nice.

It may be too late to incorporate, but you could build a ladder that slides out of the front vertical face of the loft and then swings down to rest on a stair. Sort of like the ramp that slides out of the back of a U-Haul truck.

That’s what I was hoping to be able to do. However, the ladder would not be long enough unless it was hinges in some way (like attic stairs).

looks good, but those guitars aren’t doing any good sitting in their cases :) I like to have mine out so I remember to play them to keep from getting rusty.

Wow, that is such a neat space! I wish my Dad’s house had a spot like that!

Hmmm… maybe the ladder is in two sections that slide into each other (like an extension ladder) and then hinge down?
