This collaborative effort with fellow LJ Tom T(many thanks Tom) is a house warming gift for our fellow church members(both are veterans and are now on local police forces: she is swat and he is K9) for a house warming gift. They will have a pool, so I wanted to take fellow LJ Richard’s planter box bench :
!
!
Of course we had to modify it a bit and are giving our friends the option to use the boxes as planters, food and drink holders, toy holders(for the kids), towel holder, or a place to put their firearms. You know you have got to have options…
Construction is of cedar from Tom’s fence company. Only the 1×3” boards used for the main bench were purchased. The rest of the wood was from cut offs that were destined to be burned or sent to the dump.
the entire build is 8’x 30”. The main bench is 6’ long. We made the bench a bit wider so it can double as place to layout and catch some rays by their new pool. Deck screws were used as fastener and helped keep the construction time to 4 hours(to include story swapping, ice tea breaks, and a little extra time for midstream redesigning.
Finish will be left up to the new owners so that it will be to their liking.
Tools used were table saw, miter saw, and planer.
I plan on making a similar one for myself for my poolside, but I think I want 2’ planters on each side, so that it will reach 10’ total length.
Delivery of the bench will happen after they close on their new home.

Great idea for a housewarming gift, it will probably get put to use immediately and see continuous use for
quite a while. Thank you for sharing.

Forgive the delay Woodshop girl,
I have been out of town. The basic idea came from Richard’s design. Tom and I modified the rest as we went, and so this is what we came up with.
The gift was greatly appreciated at closing just last week.
We had enough left over to donate another bench to the church and it was used as a fund raiser in a silent auction. IDK the results of the fund raiser.
Lots of fun sharing with others.
