I had never built a fireplace mantel before, but a friend thought that I should try. His wife was very specific, “in a general way”, about what she wanted, but said that they should leave the details up to me. That sounded scary to me, but it also sounded like a challenge. I love surprising my clients. It gets the blood moving. I purchased some corbels from Van Dyke’s Restorers and added them to a design that was greatly restricted by the space between the existing windows. Of course, the irregularities in the wall made it tricky to install, but I thought it turned out pretty well. I’m proud to say that my friends wife is very, very, happy and has suggested I do a few other projects for her, because this is exactly what she had hoped for. I took that to the bank, but next time I’ll charge a bit more…...maybe. P.S. I didn’t do the mirror, just the mantel.
