Project Information

Just starting on the site. I am establishing a first project more than anything. I fear my wife is a bigger talent with the camera than I am with the wood.

First pic is 4 wall street 2 pens, second is two more fancier wall street 2s, 3rd pic is a blackwood walls street 2 pen/letter opener set, forth is a tulipwood navigator fountain, fifth is an acrylic but still neat. The last one is the nicest which is a nice two-tone black and white blackwood sceptre pen.

Pens are not exactly a challenging woodworking project but they do make quick easy projects for friends and family whom you have no idea what to get them.

Very nice looking pens. Is the Blackwood hard to work with? Is it hard to get a shine on it? Do you think that you could put a CA type shine on that type of wood? I am not sure if this wood is oily or very dry. Great work keep it up. How long have you been turning pens? I like the background that you picked for the pictures. Thanks for showing then to us.

I have found blackwood to be tricky to finish I usually rub linseed oil onto the freshly sanded tube before applying finish but in the case of blackwood, especially black/white blackwood the wood seems to dull and lose depth. In the case of black/white blackwood the lighter parts get 'polluted' and the grain of the wood becomes less vibrant and starts to become darker. Now I simply do a quick light coat of oil then finish as usual.

I like blackwood because of its darkness but the grain seems more obvious than ebony. Not so much a true black but a deep blackish brown. As for the CA finish I have had no issues with it being difficult. I have fount it similar to black walnut in how it responds to turning.
