computer desk

I built this desk in 2002. After realizing that we had too many computer peripherals for any desk I could find on the market, I decided I could make my own out of plywood. Nevermind that I had no experience whatsoever—I thought I could do it. After explaining my idea to my father-in-law—a woodworker of some 40 years—he simply said, “that’s more difficult that you think it is.” And thus began my forray into woodworking. I spent two weekends in my father-in-law’s shop, learning everything I could.

The finished piece consists of two cabinets with a total of three hanging file drawers and two smaller miscellaneous drawers. The hutch at the top holds a monitor (it could easily fit two), speakers, a desk lamp and two printers, plus three cubbyholes for miscelllaneous paper.

This project was my first exposure to the following:

  • basic carcass assembly
  • dado stack operation on the table saw
  • rabbets
  • dadoes
  • bridle joints
  • router operation
  • dovetails with a jig
  • plywood edge banding
  • plugging screws

I have since moved into a house where I have begun to set up my own shop. I have inherited most of my late father-in-law’s tools, which, along with some of my own purchases, have given me a very well-equiped shop for someone of my skill level. I’m not finished setting up the shop yet, but who ever is?

After looking at literally hundreds of projects on LJ, I find myself drawn to the fine details of smaller projects, particularly boxes. So that’s where I hope to move next … after I finish a cabinet in the basement I promised my wife I would build for our girls. The list never ends, does it? :)

Thats a fine looking desk. I bet your father in law was right when he said “that’s more difficult that you think it is.”

Attractive and functional where’s the problem there? A good first project and learning experience. Don’t be shy about not knowing what you’re doing, experience is only important to those who know what they’re doing. Heck if you knew it was hard you probably wouldn’t have done it. And yet you did.

That came out quite nice. As to the list never ending…, I hope not!

This is a nice piece of furniture. Thanks for sharing.

Looks like this was an excellent learning experience. I enjoy doing bigger projects like this on occasion, but I think you will find that boxmaking presents a different set of challenges. I’m looking forward to seeing some future projects from you.

Very nice desk Corey! My son, the last child still at home, is leaving for the Navy later this month. I’ll be taking over his room for my office/playroom. ;) I plan on making a custom computer desk that will hold my two computers as well as a work laptop. Do you have any tips, suggestions, etc. for making a computer desk?

Thanks all for the encouragement. I’ll soon post some other projects I’ve done since, but I wanted this to be my first project post.

Owen, The one thing I would suggest is that you make sure you take ergonomics into consideration. The desk I built is pretty basic in design, but I wanted to make sure the monitor was elevated to a comfortable eye level and that I could move the keyboard out of the way when necessary. The hutch accomplished both of those needs. And remember that although flat panel monitors are much lighter than CRTs, printers and multifunction machines can still be heavy, so plan to support that extra weight.

Many computer desks I’ve seen incorporate a shelf of some kind for the CPU. I’ve never found this necessary, because I’ve had room to put CPU next to the desk. However, one drawback has been that I’ve had to buy extension cables for my keyboard and mouse. Consequently, you may want to take cable runs into consideration in your design.

One thing I’d do differently is to make a better space for task lighting when I’m not using the computer. We don’t have any of the peripherals shown in the photos any more, but that little red desk lamp is still the only task light for the whole desk.
